Once you own some Bitcoin or other digital assets you will want to find the most efficient way of keeping track of your new investment and wonder "what is the best cryptocurrency portfolio tracker?".
With so many coins across a plethora of exchanges, some of which overlap but others that don't this isn't the easiest thing to do straight away unless you only hold a few coins and purchased them from 1 or 2 exchanges. Like most who take the red pill and get hooked this won't be the case and finding a good way to manage this will be of utmost importance.
There are several ways you can do this so let's take a look at some of the options available.
Blockfolio
The most popularly talked about tracker is the smartphone app for iOS and Android devices that allows you to keep tabs on your favorite coins as well as track the amounts you hold, the trades you have placed and set alerts.
While this is the most popular tool and an app I use daily my personal preference is to use it as an alert tool to let me know via notifications when prices hit my buy or sell zones. The reason for this is that the process is very manual without any support at present for API's to automatically import your trades and holdings and I'm not the biggest fan of using a phone, give me a laptop or desktop to work from any day!
Blockfolio is constantly improving the app and have added news stories and other features but automated imports are what we are all still waiting for to get full use out of this tool.
The best feature of this app is having alerts while you away from the keyboard, I use this to then decide if I need to go and buy or sell something or not.
Delta
Another mobile app and alternative to Blockfolio that a more recent addition to the crypto toolbelt is the Delta app.
From my limited testing so far the app works very similarly to Blockfolio and has an arguably more attractive graphical user interface. I'm not won over yet but will be keeping an eye on it to see if they outpace Blockfolio with their roadmap and upcoming features. Delta App features over 2000 alt coins so about the same as Blockfolio.
Update: After using Delta app for a bit longer I definitely like the interface and design more than Blockfolio but can't see me switching unless API imports are added to it first.
Altpocket.io
Altpocket is one of my favorite tools and probably the best free automated approach in a website platform. Altpocket has a beautiful design and layout putting your trades and positions on cards. You can connect up the Bittrex, Binance and other exchange API's to allow for automated importing of your trades and performance.
Altpocket allows you to share your portfolio with others to help friends, family and other traders learn, copy or just to see what you are currently holding. Not a feature for everyone but if you are an influencer, YouTuber, crypto hedge fund manager or some other type of expert in the field teaching people then this could serve a handy purpose.
Supports day and night themes which is a popular feature with modern apps, especially in the crypto world and ideal when you need to look at it at 4AM when you wake up with the sweats or to an alert.
Google Spreadsheets
Spreadsheets! Remember the fun you had with spreadsheets at school or the office? Nope, me neither, aside from an easter egg that allowed you to plan snake in Excel back in the day. As mundane as spreadsheets might seem they are an investor and traders best friend and an absolute essential.
Regardless of whether you use another app or website to manage your portfolio, it's handy to have a spreadsheet to manage your totals and for other useful crypto calculations.
Why Spreadsheets?
Spreadsheets like Google Sheets allow you to add Google Finance or Yahoo Finance to do various conversions between fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.
You can also use formulas to work out the % gains on potential trades and other calculations that will make your life a lot easier and save you jumping between different tools like Currencio as you can create all of the crypto calculators you want in a single spreadsheet.
Another win is that inevitably you will invest in a coin and have it in a wallet that isn't supported by any auto importer tools or you will purchase ICO coins that aren't yet indexed by any purpose-built trackers. Despite this, you will still need a way to keep track of these tokens and the price you initially paid in both your native fiat currency and the digital asset you used to invest in the ICO.
When creating your spreadsheet you have a few options.
A lot of people want a unique setup and opt to build it themselves based on examples that exist for you to copy.
Other people may prefer to use a Google Sheet that has been shared for people to make a copy of and then just fill in their holdings.
CryptoFinance is an extension for Google Chrome that adds additional crypto tools to Google Sheets.
CoinTracking
CoinTracking.info is the best all-around solution, especially for those who have a lot of coins on different exchanges and hate manually adding their trades and don't feel altpocket is thorough enough yet.
CoinTracking supports a very long list of exchanges with 54 at the last count including legacy exchanges that don't exist anymore which is great if you need to use data from exchanges that have since shut down.
Other benefits include their tax report features, trade analysis, offer a choice of manually inputted, CSV upload or automatic API options for importing your trade history.
It is actually very simple to get started using this tool to make everything run on autopilot.
1. Create an account at CoinTracking.
2. Import your trades with the import tool from exchanges to CoinTracking using either CSV Upload or API Import.
3. Your portfolio is created and easy to follow and organize. You can even make it public and share it with others.
Here is a video about CoinTracking and how it works.
What route you decide to take will very much depend on your requirements but the above are the best options available. Do you have a tool that you prefer? Get in touch and let us know.
